Job description
Dredgit Corporation is seeking an experienced Dump Truck Operator to haul borrow and fill material in support of a dike-raising project at the Jones Oyster Bed Island Dredged Material Containment Area (DMCA) in Jasper County, SC. This role is responsible for safely operating an articulated or rigid-frame dump truck over soft, saturated, and often temporary haul roads along the dike alignment, loading and dumping material as directed to keep the dike-raising work on schedule. This is physically demanding, outdoor work performed on a remote barrier island site with tidally influenced conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of verifiable experience operating off-road/articulated dump trucks (ADTs) or heavy rigid-frame haul trucks on heavy civil, dredging, or marine/wetland construction projects
- Prior experience hauling on dike/levee raising, dredged material containment area (DMCA) construction, or similar marsh/wetland island earthwork strongly preferred
- Experience operating on soft, unstable, or saturated haul roads and temporary marsh access routes
- Comfortable working on a remote island site accessed by barge or boat, with limited land-based access
- Valid driver's license (CDL preferred, depending on truck classification and any public-road travel requirements)
- Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening
- OSHA 10-Hour construction certification required; OSHA 30-Hour preferred
- Ability to read and follow haul route plans and direction from spotters/ground personnel
- Physical ability to climb in and out of equipment, work outdoors in all weather conditions (including coastal SC heat/humidity), and perform pre/post-shift inspections
Skills Required
- Skilled, controlled operation of articulated/rigid-frame haul trucks on soft, wet, and uneven marsh terrain
- Ability to safely load, haul, and dump borrow/fill material along a linear dike alignment with excavators and dozers working nearby
- Strong awareness of truck payload limits, ground conditions, and load stability to avoid rollovers or becoming stuck
- Ability to back into and position at loading/dumping points precisely and safely under operator/spotter direction
- Understanding of basic haul road maintenance needs (ruts, soft spots, standing water, tidal effects) and ability to report conditions
- Strong situational awareness around other heavy equipment, ground personnel, and marsh/waterfront hazards
- Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance checks (fluids, tires, hydraulics) and report mechanical issues
- Effective communication with loaders, spotters, and other operators via radio/hand signals
Key Responsibilities
- Haul borrow material, fill, and armor stone between borrow/loading points and the dike-raising work area
- Position truck accurately and safely at excavator loading points and designated dumping/placement locations along the dike
- Operate safely over soft, saturated, and temporary haul roads, adjusting speed and route to changing ground and tidal conditions
- Monitor and report haul road deterioration (ruts, soft spots, ponding) to the superintendent/foreman for maintenance
- Coordinate with excavator and dozer operators to maintain continuous, efficient material flow along the dike alignment
- Conduct daily pre- and post-operation equipment inspections; complete inspection checklists and report defects immediately
- Follow all site-specific safety plans, including haul road traffic control, equipment travel over soft ground, and tidal/marine safety protocols
- Attend and participate in daily safety briefings/tailgate talks and toolbox meetings
- Maintain awareness of survey control points, existing dike infrastructure, and environmentally sensitive areas (oyster beds, marsh habitat)
- Perform other equipment operation and general labor duties as assigned in support of the dike-raising project
