Job description

Job Description Job Description Build measurement certainty at TOMZ (Berlin, CT)

Our mission is simple: every part we ship should measure exactly as intended. Join us to design, program, and maintain the automated inspection systems that make that promise real.

What you'll do
  • Create, verify, and run automated CMM and metrology programs for first piece, in process, and final inspections.
  • Engineer fixtures, workholding, and functional gages that stabilize measurement and repeatability.
  • Define inspection criteria directly from drawings/specs using best practices and relevant standards.
  • Reduce measurement bias and confirm linearity, repeatability, and reproducibility; communicate Alpha/Beta risk.
  • Keep inspection assets healthy: qualify probes, perform routine cleaning, and check scales.
  • Integrate automatic data collection from metrology equipment into inspection plans and quality records.
  • Develop inspection methods, tool mapping, FAIs, and in process checks to support manufacturing throughput.
  • Update programs and documentation to reflect engineering changes.
  • Contribute to root cause investigations connected to automated inspection, tooling, and software.
  • Lead/support Gage R&R and other MSA activities; coordinate or perform calibration to maintain traceability.
  • Author work instructions and train operators on designated automated inspection equipment.
  • Take on related tasks as assigned to meet team goals.
What you bring
  • Expertise in GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and familiarity with ANSI/ASME and ISO standards.
  • Hands on use of precision measurement instruments including CMMs, Vision Systems, and Contracers.
  • Programming strength in Calypso (preferred) or PC DMIS/Open DMIS.
  • 3D modeling and drafting experience with a knack for translating CAD into resilient inspection routines.
  • Clear English communication skills; able to work cross functionally with R&D, Manufacturing, and QA with minimal guidance.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe PDF.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in regulated industries such as Aerospace, Defense, Medical Device, or Pharmaceutical.
  • Working knowledge of GMP/ISO requirements.
  • Exposure to CT scanning, white light scanning, and broader 3D metrology toolsets.
  • Experience with PC DMIS or Geomeasure.
Education & background
  • Associate's degree preferred (Manufacturing or Engineering) or equivalent directly transferable experience.
  • Training focus areas: Drafting/GD&T, CMM programming, CAD modeling, and Vision System programming.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience with advanced metrology equipment.
Travel & schedule
  • Up to 10% travel outside the workplace.
  • Flexible availability for last minute emergencies.
  • May involve multiple overnight trips and occasional weekends.
Physical requirements
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs (team lift/mechanical assist over 50 lbs).
  • Frequent keyboard/computer work.
  • Ability to wear PPE: cut resistant gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, slip resistant shoes.
Proficiencies
  • Precision Measurement & Hand Metrology
  • Machine Geometry & Alignment
  • Microsoft Excel
Tools you'll use
