Job Description

Company Overview

Our client is an established, locally operated organization serving customers throughout Monroe County and the surrounding western Wisconsin community. The organization operates a full-service store offering fuel, food service, beverages, grocery and everyday retail items.

Position Description

The Store Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and day-to-day operation of a full-service store in Monroe County. This hands-on leader will manage the Assistant Manager and a team of part-time employees while maintaining a customer-friendly, clean, safe, compliant, and profitable store. The Store Manager owns staffing, scheduling, training, inventory, purchasing, cash controls, merchandising, food service standards, and store execution. The position requires flexibility to ensure proper coverage and respond when unexpected staffing or operational needs arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all daily store operations, including opening and closing, cash handling, point-of-sale activity, store organization, cleanliness, and customer service.
  • Manage, coach, and develop the Assistant Manager and store employees; oversee hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, performance feedback, corrective action, and staffing decisions.
  • Build schedules that provide appropriate coverage throughout operating hours while managing labor needs and responding to call-offs or unexpected staffing gaps.
  • Set customer-service expectations, resolve concerns, and coach employees on courteous, attentive service and suggestive selling.
  • Oversee inventory, purchasing, receiving, product rotation, pricing, replenishment, merchandising, promotional displays, and shrink control across fuel, merchandise, and food service.
  • Maintain food-service quality and safety standards, including preparation, recipes, weights, holding times, temperatures, sanitation, and safe food-handling practices.
  • Ensure accurate daily closeout, register reconciliation, sales and cash reporting, bank deposits, currency controls, and delivery of required paperwork to the main office.
  • Review cash, sales, payroll, food cost, and inventory records; investigate variances and operating discrepancies and take corrective action.
  • Protect company assets and maintain a safe environment by enforcing security procedures and responding appropriately to theft, drive-offs, property damage, injuries, and equipment issues.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, age-restricted sales requirements, health and safety standards, food-brand requirements, and company policies.
  • Monitor the store, fuel area, equipment, restrooms, parking lot, and surrounding property; coordinate maintenance, repairs, and supply needs.
  • Prepare or review operating reports, employee timekeeping, vendor documentation, inventory readings, environmental readings, and other administrative records.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Previous retail management experience required.
  • Experience as a Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager, or comparable people leader with responsibility for daily operations and employee supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, train, schedule, coach, and hold employees accountable while maintaining a positive, service-focused culture.
  • Working knowledge of inventory control, purchasing, merchandising, cash handling, bank deposits, shrink prevention, and basic retail financial controls.
  • Comfort using point-of-sale systems and Microsoft Office/Outlook, with the ability to learn additional store and reporting systems.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organization, judgment, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a valid Wisconsin driver's license required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, generally 45-50 hours per week, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage when needed.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, work inside and outside in varying conditions, regularly lift or move up to 20 pounds, occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally use ladders.
  • Employment is contingent upon meeting the employer's drug-free workplace requirements.
