Flux-Core Welder (Structural)

Position Overview
Staff Source is hiring an experienced Flux-Core Welder to fabricate structural steel components, including crane and heavy-equipment structures, for a manufacturing client. You will weld beams, plates and assemblies to blueprint specs in a production shop, with a focus on strong, clean, code-quality welds.

Location: Knoxville, TN area
Employment Type: Full-time, contract-to-hire
Schedule: 1st and 2nd shift available, Monday-Friday; overtime as needed
Pay: $19 - $24 per hour, based on experience

Key Responsibilities

• Perform flux-core arc welding (FCAW), dual-shield and self-shielded, on structural steel beams, plates and assemblies
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings and weld symbols to determine joint type, size and sequence
• Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions on medium-to-heavy plate
• Fit, tack and align parts using clamps, jigs, levels and squares before final welding
• Measure, cut and prep material with torches, grinders, saws and plasma cutters
• Inspect your own welds for size, profile, penetration and defects; grind and repair as needed
• Set up and adjust wire feed speed, voltage and gas flow for the material and position
• Maintain welding equipment and keep the work area clean and organized
• Follow all shop safety rules and PPE requirements

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of flux-core welding experience in structural steel or heavy fabrication
• Able to pass a hands-on weld test (vertical and overhead flux-core on plate)
• Solid blueprint reading and weld symbol knowledge
• Skilled with tape measures, squares and other layout tools
• Comfortable using grinders, torches and other shop hand and power tools
• Own basic welding gear (hood, gloves, jacket) and steel-toe boots
• Reliable attendance and transportation to the client site
• Able to pass a background check and drug screen

Preferred Qualifications

• AWS D1.1 structural welding certification (3G/4G)
• Experience fabricating cranes, crane runways, frames or other heavy structural assemblies
• Overhead crane or forklift experience for moving heavy parts
• MIG or stick welding experience in addition to flux-core
• Welding trade school or vocational program completion

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Lift and move up to 50 lbs regularly; heavier parts are moved with cranes or hoists
• Stand, bend, kneel, climb and reach overhead for full shifts
• Work in a fabrication shop with heat, noise, sparks, fumes and changing temperatures
• Wear required PPE at all times: welding hood, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and steel-toe boots
