Payroll Manager - Construction

Indianapolis, IN

The Payroll Manager oversees the complete payroll process for both field and office employees. This position is responsible for accurate and timely payroll processing, regulatory compliance, payroll reporting, and administration of payroll-related systems.

The role is particularly focused on construction payroll, including union employees, collective bargaining requirements, tax compliance, deductions, garnishments, and benefit contributions. The Payroll Manager also serves as a key resource for payroll technology, system improvements, automation, and process efficiency.

Construction Payroll Manager Key Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end payroll processing for field and office employees.
  • Ensure payroll is accurate, complete, and processed according to established deadlines.
  • Apply federal, state, and local payroll requirements, including taxes, deductions, garnishments, and benefits.
  • Interpret union agreements involving wages, overtime, classifications, and benefit contributions.
  • Coordinate union dues, pension payments, and health and welfare contributions in accordance with applicable agreements.
  • Prepare and submit payroll tax filings, W-2s, corrected W-2s, and other required reports.
  • Review payroll records and investigate discrepancies in coordination with HR, Finance, and field operations.
  • Maintain payroll system setup, employee records, pay codes, deduction codes, tax information, and other configuration data.
  • Partner with HR and IT on payroll system enhancements, integrations, upgrades, and automation.
  • Support internal and external payroll audits and provide required documentation.
  • Develop and maintain payroll procedures, controls, and documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline payroll processes, reduce manual work, and improve data accuracy.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive employee and payroll information.

Construction Payroll Manager Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 5-10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting payroll within the construction industry.
  • Experience processing payroll for both field and office employees.
  • Union payroll experience strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and construction payroll requirements.
  • Experience with payroll/accounting systems and technology.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with HR, Finance, IT, and field personnel.
  • Ability to interpret regulations, contracts, and technical documentation.
  • Valid driver's license.
