Safety Monitor

Under general supervision, maintains a safe and orderly school environment by regularly patrolling buildings and surrounding school property to deter trespassing, unauthorized entry, vandalism, theft, fire damage, and other violations of District policies. Provides security services at District events and provides assistance to students and community members. Performs surveillance of assigned areas of responsibility; responds to crisis situations; and provides support during emergencies.

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Minimum 21 years of age. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. Prior security or public safety experience; or any equivalent education, training, and certification requirements that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Working knowledge of District policies, procedures, and techniques related to safety and security enforcement. Knowledge of the application of proper security practices and surveillance of property. Knowledge of state and federal laws, guidelines, and compliance requirements applicable to the position. General knowledge and use of computer applications, cameras, communication devices, etc., relevant to the position. Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, school, and District staff in oral and written form. Ability to maintain order firmly and fairly, demonstrating tact, patience, and understanding. Adequate visual acuity to observe and monitor the movement of students, District staff, large crowds, etc. Ability to visually observe activities in assigned areas during both day and nighttime hours. Adequate physical ability to properly perform physical demands for handling doors, gates, locks, and other equipment. Possesses sufficient mobility and dexterity to monitor and patrol school buildings and grounds. Possesses sufficient strength and agility to apprehend and detain trespassers or to separate individuals in an altercation. Ability to work rotating shifts as assigned. Ability to be recalled to the District at various hours in the event of an emergency. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and initiate proper and acceptable direction for the completion of work with little to no supervision and instruction. Ability to apply judgment and complex logic in defining problems, collecting information, and drawing valid conclusions. Ability to maintain high standards of organization, accuracy, and timeliness in exercising duties. Ability to manage frequent interruptions in a flexible manner and difficult, stressful situations in a professional and appropriate fashion. Ability to work independently and as a productive member of a team. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, continually changing work environment.

In uniform at all times while on duty, maintains order, performs safety patrols, crowd control, and investigations. Administers basic first aid and reports all injuries to the Principal and supervisor. Practices conflict resolution techniques and intervenes or removes students in cases of unruly or confrontational behavior. Questions, detains, removes, or assists in the removal of suspicious or unauthorized persons from school property as necessary. Directs pedestrian traffic, ensuring safe street crossings for students and visitors at roadways and campus perimeters. Performs surveillance of school property as assigned for protection against theft, fire damage, vandalism, and other hazards. Ensures that all sites and property within the assigned patrol area are secured and security systems are operational. Responds to alarms in the patrol area and takes appropriate action. Coordinates activities with supervisors and other divisions; exchanges information with public safety personnel/first responders. Cooperates with and assists law enforcement personnel as required in investigations. Maintains normal availability by radio and by telephone. Responds to calls and takes appropriate action. Prepares incident reports; maintains required logs with adequate detail, accuracy, and timeliness of completion. Operates a District safety vehicle in completing surveillance work and assigned duties; operates related safety operations equipment including but not limited to radios, flashlights, locks, gates, etc. Maintains assigned District equipment, facilities, and supplies. Provides safety services at special events, games, competitions, graduations, etc., Assists with traffic direction and crowd control as needed before, during, and after events. Assists citizens with such issues as locked or stalled vehicles, pedestrian safety, etc. Establishes a professional rapport with students, parents, and staff that fosters their respect. Displays the highest standards for ethical and professional behavior while working with students, parents, school personnel, District staff, community members, and other parties. Exercises sound judgment and interacts in a calm, courteous, and professional manner. Adheres to the highest standards of confidentiality concerning sensitive matters, students, and staff. Serves as a role model for others; dresses professionally in District-issued uniforms; willingly accepts responsibility; and demonstrates pride in the public education profession. Provides assistance, guidance, and instruction for new safety personnel as needed. Demonstrates prompt, regular attendance. Available to work in-person on-site during normal business hours and on rotating shifts as assigned. Available to work at special events, such as sports events, games, extracurricular competitions, graduations, etc. Available shifts: AM, PM, Overnight, Temporary nights and weekends, Substitute assignments. Willingly performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Vision: Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods of time. Ability to distinguish features, observe movements, and monitor activity in daylight and nighttime hours. Ability to distinguish objects, persons, and situations at close and far distances; distinguish colors; ability to focus on issues at close range, in peripheral areas, and at reasonable distances.

Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.

Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications and to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone, computer, or virtual setting.

Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers; twist and bend at wrist and elbows; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.

Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh fifteen (15) or more pounds on a frequent basis. Ability to stand and walk regularly for extended periods of time to patrol buildings, events, and grounds. Ability to kneel, crouch, and climb steps. Ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to climb access ladders to the roofs of buildings or other structures. Sufficient strength and agility to apprehend and detain trespassers or to separate individuals in a fight.

Environmental Requirements: Ability to work independently; work cooperatively with others. Ability to perform duties indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions; may work near moving mechanical parts. May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extremes of heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, etc.

Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret, and apply information on a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a proficiency level appropriate to the position; sound judgment; the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understands and adequately manages stressful situations.

Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Reliable transportation required. May include evening hours, nights, and weekends depending upon shift assignments to provide adequate supervision for events and safety for District facilities. May include rotating shift assignments.
