Job description
International Steel & Counterweights is seeking a hands-on Welding and Fabrication Supervisor to lead our third-shift crew. This position requires an experienced welder who can manage employees, maintain production and quality standards, and help team members develop their welding and fabrication skills.
This is a working supervisor position. The supervisor must be willing and able to personally perform welding and fabrication work when staffing shortages or production needs require additional support.
Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate the third-shift welding and fabrication crew, assigning work according to production priorities and employee capabilities.
Provide hands-on instruction and coaching to help less-experienced welders improve their technique, workmanship, and productivity.
Demonstrate proper welding methods, equipment setup, fit-up, and fabrication practices.
Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, dimensions, and fabrication instructions, and help employees understand how to build parts correctly.
Verify that fabrication instructions and materials match the blueprint and resolve discrepancies before work proceeds.
Ensure welding and fabrication work meets applicable AWS D1.1 requirements, approved welding procedure specifications, customer requirements, and company quality standards.
Inspect fit-up, dimensions, and weld quality throughout production; identify defects and coordinate corrective action.
Personally weld and fabricate as needed to support the crew, cover staffing shortages, and meet production schedules.
Enforce company safety procedures, required PPE use, and safe operation of welding and fabrication equipment.
Monitor employee performance, attendance, and work practices; provide clear direction and address concerns promptly.
Communicate production progress, staffing needs, equipment issues, and quality concerns to management and the following shift.
Maintain a clean, organized work area and promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated welding and steel fabrication experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Previous supervisory or lead experience, including assigning work and holding employees accountable for safety, quality, and production.
Ability to teach welding skills through clear explanations, practical demonstrations, and constructive feedback.
Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication blueprints and welding symbols.
Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 requirements and the ability to apply approved welding procedures.
Ability to pass a 3G weld qualification test under AWS D1.1 using the welding process and procedure required by the company.
Ability and willingness to perform hands-on welding and fabrication work as part of the supervisor role.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Dependable attendance and availability to work third shift.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position in an industrial environment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
