Position Overview DOT Construction, Inc. is seeking an experienced Commercial Electrician, preferably a Journeyman Electrician, to perform electrical installation, troubleshooting, modification, and completion work on commercial construction projects throughout South Texas. This is a hands-on field position for an electrician who can work independently, read construction drawings, perform layout, install complete electrical systems, troubleshoot field conditions, and produce code-compliant work with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate has strong experience with commercial electrical construction and understands that safety, quality, production, and professional workmanship are equally important. Journeyman Electrician License Preferred. Compensation: A $20-$45/hr, competitive hourly rate based on experience, licensing, demonstrated skill level, and project responsibilities. Overtime opportunities of around 15-20 hours per week will be available depending on project schedule. What You Will Do on the Jobsite Commercial Electrical InstallationInstall commercial electrical systems from rough-in through final trim and turnover.Install EMT, rigid conduit, PVC, flexible conduit, and other approved raceway systems.Bend, cut, thread, route, support, and install conduit.Install electrical boxes, junction boxes, pull boxes, supports, hangers, and equipment connections.Pull, identify, terminate, and test conductors.Install branch circuits, feeders, and equipment circuits.Install receptacles, switches, lighting controls, and electrical devices.Install interior and exterior lighting systems.Install electrical panels, disconnects, transformers, and related distribution equipment.Install equipment connections for HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, and specialty systems.Perform electrical trim-out and final device installation.Assist with electrical testing, startup, commissioning, and project turnover.Perform modifications and troubleshooting of existing commercial electrical systems when required. Conduit & Raceway Installation The electrician should be experienced in professional commercial conduit installation, including:EMT conduit.Rigid metal conduit.PVC conduit.Flexible metallic and nonmetallic conduit.Conduit racks and support systems.Strut and Unistrut systems.Threaded rod, clamps, anchors, and hangers.Underground and above-ceiling raceways.Equipment drops and connections.Stub-ups and stub-downs.Conduit offsets, saddles, kicks, and field bends. Conduit installations are expected to be straight, level, properly supported, professionally routed, and coordinated with other trades. Electrical Rough-InLay out electrical systems from construction drawings.Install boxes and raceways before walls and ceilings are closed.Coordinate rough-in locations with architectural finishes and other trades.Verify device elevations and equipment locations.Confirm wall types, ceiling conditions, and equipment requirements before installation.Identify conflicts before electrical work is concealed.Coordinate penetrations, sleeves, supports, and access requirements. Electrical Distribution Depending on project scope and experience, responsibilities may include installation and connection of:Panelboards.Transformers.Disconnect switches.Distribution equipment.Feeders.Branch circuits.Equipment connections.Motor connections.Mechanical equipment circuits.HVAC electrical connections.Specialty equipment power.Grounding and bonding systems. Lighting & ControlsInstall commercial lighting fixtures.Install lighting branch circuits.Install switches, occupancy sensors, photocells, and lighting controls.Install emergency and exit lighting.Coordinate fixture locations with reflected ceiling plans.Verify fixture types against approved schedules and submittals.Troubleshoot lighting and control issues.Complete final aiming, adjustment, and testing where required. Read the Plans - Build It Correctly DOT Construction expects experienced electricians to be capable of working from construction documents rather than relying entirely on verbal direction. The electrician must be able to read and understand:Electrical floor plans.Power plans.Lighting plans.Single-line diagrams.Panel schedules.Electrical details.Equipment schedules.Architectural reflected ceiling plans.Mechanical and plumbing equipment plans.Specifications.Approved submittals.Shop drawings.RFIs and construction revisions. The electrician should verify actual field conditions before installation and communicate discrepancies before they result in rework. Coordination With Other Trades Commercial electrical work requires constant coordination. The electrician will be expected to work professionally with:Superintendents.Electrical Foremen.Project Managers.HVAC contractors.Plumbers.Fire alarm contractors.Low-voltage contractors.Drywall and framing crews.Ceiling installers.Millwork installers.Structural trades.General Contractors and other subcontractors. Electrical installations must be coordinated so conduit, fixtures, devices, panels, and equipment do not conflict with other building systems. Troubleshooting & Problem Solving Experienced candidates should be capable of:Troubleshooting electrical circuits.Identifying open circuits, shorts, grounding problems, and incorrect connections.Reading electrical drawings to determine intended installation.Identifying field conflicts.Verifying voltage and circuit conditions.Using electrical testing equipment safely.Diagnosing installation problems.Developing practical field solutions while maintaining code and project requirements. When drawings or field conditions conflict, the electrician is expected to stop, identify the problem, and communicate it to supervision rather than install questionable work that will require correction later. Quality & Craftsmanship DOT Construction expects electrical installations to reflect professional commercial workmanship. The electrician will be responsible for:Keeping conduit runs straight and organized.Maintaining consistent routing and elevations.Providing proper conduit supports.Maintaining clean panel and equipment terminations.Properly identifying conductors and circuits.Maintaining clean and organized electrical rooms.Protecting installed equipment and finished work.Verifying installations before requesting inspection.Correcting deficiencies promptly.Minimizing punch-list work and rework. Safety Expectations Electrical work presents significant hazards, and DOT Construction expects experienced electricians to understand their responsibility for safe execution. Responsibilities include:Follow DOT Construction and project-specific safety requirements.Follow applicable OSHA requirements.Wear required PPE.Follow electrical safe-work practices.Maintain proper ladder and lift safety.Properly inspect and use electrical tools and equipment.Maintain clean and organized work areas.Protect open electrical boxes and exposed conditions.Maintain appropriate barricades and warning systems.Follow applicable Lockout/Tagout procedures.Never perform energized work unless specifically authorized and performed under the project's approved procedures.Immediately report unsafe conditions to supervision. Safety is not secondary to production. Daily Planning & Productivity A successful DOT Construction electrician should understand both craftsmanship and production. Employees are expected to:Understand assigned daily work.Review drawings before starting.Determine required materials and tools.Plan work before installation.Maintain productive installation rates.Communicate material shortages early.Identify potential delays before they affect production.Coordinate work with the Foreman and Superintendent.Complete assigned areas according to the project schedule.Keep work areas clean throughout the shift. Required Skills & Qualifications Candidates should have strong experience in commercial electrical construction and demonstrate the ability to perform many of the following tasks with limited supervision:Commercial electrical rough-in.Conduit bending and installation.Wire pulling.Branch circuit installation.Feeder installation.Electrical device installation.Lighting installation.Electrical panel installation.Equipment connections.Grounding and bonding.Electrical troubleshooting.Reading electrical drawings.Reading panel schedules and one-line diagrams.Field layout.Material identification.Proper use of electrical hand and power tools.Safe use of ladders and lifts.Working from architectural and electrical plans. Preferred QualificationsTexas Journeyman Electrician License preferred.Several years of commercial electrical construction experience.Experience working independently from construction drawings.Experience with commercial tenant improvement and new construction.Experience with electrical distribution systems.Experience installing commercial lighting and controls.Experience with EMT and rigid conduit.Experience with equipment and mechanical-system connections.Experience working in active commercial or industrial facilities.OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.CPR/First Aid training is beneficial.Experience working under strict QA/QC and safety requirements is beneficial . click apply for full job details
